About Me: Why This Blog?
Introduction: The First Day
I still remember my first day of university. At the time, I only carried my notebook and pencil case in my backpack and thought that I was prepared. It quickly hit me that university is nothing like high school, and that I was going to need to approach it differently. Little things that I thought were simple (such as taking notes) wasn’t as easy as I thought they would be. I remember staring at the first PowerPoint and thinking, “how am I supposed to memorize all of this in 4 weeks?” Little did I know, university isn’t complicated, it just requires strategic planning, organizing, and initiative. Learning how to master different subjects, manage workload, and prioritizing mental health requires being focused and organized.
Why Create This Blog?
As a first-year student, I quickly realized that I needed to get help in some way and not feel as alone. I became fascinated with online platforms where students were sharing their experiences, asking questions, and getting answers. One of the ways I was able to get insight on the university life was through blogs (from blogger, Tumblr, etc). These honestly shaped a lot of my experiences in university and helped me navigate through many obstacles. Hearing stories and challenges that were like mine from strangers made me feel heard. I didn’t have any older siblings to help me when I first started, and my parents are immigrants who didn’t know how the education system here is. Despite the little help and guidance, I was still able to succeed in university and push through. A huge factor of that success came from these online websites. I am creating this blog so that I can speak to all the students who were a first-year Leena at one point (confused, stressed, and hopeless). I am hoping that my blog will be a place where you can find helpful strategies, study tools, tips and tricks, and a place where you can relate to a lot of the difficulties that I faced and overcame. The goal here is not to create a “perfect student”, rather its to help anyone who needs guidance, gets confused, or might benefit from implementing new ideas. The university life is a never-ending learning experience (where we can continuously learn and improve).
